I’ve decided to homeschool, now what?

It is normal to feel awkward and unsure.
  • First- take a deep breath
  • Then, establish some goals and expectations.  Trust yourself to find the best method to do this.
Remember, there is very little “fact” out there, but much opinion pretending to be fact.
  • Plan a “trial period”.
  • Regularly evaluate and change as needed.
A plan that makes everyone miserable is not a good plan.  Be flexible!

“For many parents, homeschooling is a matter of heart and belief; they feel deeply and strongly that they should be homeschooling. They sometimes start homeschooling with only this conviction to go on, unsure of exactly how they will proceed, and they work out practical details and solve problems as they go along.”                                                                                                                                   -Larry and Susan Kaseman, in "Taking Charge Through Homeschooling"

Remember, if your children have been in a formal school system before, homeschooling may be scary.  It may take them some time to feel comfortable with the idea.

The longer children have been in school, the longer the transition to self-motivated learning takes.

Consider joining a support group.  This will help you as well as your children.
